The Best Story On Leadership I’ve Ever Heard

Hey Friends,

I’ve been teaching on Leadership at our church’s leader’s meetings.
Check this out:
When my sister, Connie, was in high school, one day the teacher walks in and says,
“Today, we are going to talk about leadership. But first, I want everyone in this room
who thinks they are a follower to get up and stand on the left side of the room.
Everyone who thinks they are a leader, get up and stand on the right side of the room.”

So all of the kids, trying to be humble or something,
got up and stood on the follower side of the room.

Nobody stood on the leader’s side.

My sister, standing in that follower line looked around and said, “Well, I guess I’m a leader.”
and she walked over to the leader’s side of the room.

   After she did this…..

              everyone followed her!
Remember my friends:
To be a leader,
  • you have to be going somewhere
  • you have to provide enough influence for them to leave their status quo

People want a better life and won’t follow you unless you can better their position.

A Free Download For You

Hey Friends,

I’ve added a new song to the list on the left here.
This is a song I wrote on a prayer retreat a few years ago.
My friend John King produced it for me; he’s a genius.
I played around with it after he was done and tried a different intro.
Let me know what you think.
I hope you enjoy it.
God bless

One Of My Heroes

Hey Friends,

I want to introduce you to a person whom God has used in my life in a powerful way:
He is a powerful preacher of the Gospel. God also used him at my ordination service back in 2005 to call Nancy & I out of the audience to prophecy over us.
Here’s the video of that:

That was amazing because he did not know that out of all the people that were being ordained that night, I was the only one being ordained for the first time as a pastor. He also did not know that I worked there and was in charge of that particular conference, but the prophecy said, “You have to go back…” when he said that I knew he was talking about going back to my former church to pastor there.
Anyway, Bishop Bismark has a blog and I wanted you to see it. He is doing a powerful work in Zimbabwe, take a quick moment and read the description of what he just did recently. It’s a powerful testimony.
Love y’all
Blessings

Will He Come Through?

Hello Friends,
Are you ready to walk by faith?

God loves it when His children live by faith. But that often can leave us in an uncomfortable position where our natural eyes don’t see what our heart sees. That can be tense. But if we go with what’s in our heart rather than what’s in our mind then we are choosing to walk by faith. This, my friend, is very pleasing to God.

Hebrews 11:6
 And without faith
it is impossible to please God…

Romans 14:23
…everything that does not come from faith
is sin.
When God has spoken to  your heart and you believed what He said, then faith has come into you. From then on you make the decision to believe it or not.
Romans 10:17
So then faith comes by hearing,
and hearing by the word of God.
So make a decision to believe and stand in faith because it will be richly rewarded.
Hebrews 10:35
  So do not throw away your confidence;
it will be richly rewarded.
My friend, I’ve seen God come through over and over again. Sometimes at the last minute, but God is faithful, your faith will bring that answer in for a landing right there for you. Don’t give up. Wait for the Lord to fulfill the promise.
When that tension comes, your mind will have a natural tendency to try to make up a “safe” way for you to get what you need. Abraham did this with his wife’s maid and ended up giving birth to Ishmael. Ishmael was man’s answer, but Isaac was God’s answer; and Ishmael has never been a blessing.
Be patient my friend, wait on the Lord.
He will make a way for you.
God bless

Take It By Faith!!!

The following is a short testimony/article I wrote for a healing magazine that our church publishes called “Revive”:
So, when I was in High School, I had a thing called pharyngeal measles. It resulted in a loud hacking cough. It wasn’t contagious (as far as I know) so I continued in school coughing loudly and often. This illness was the kind that was more inconvenient than anything else. I had to go to the doctor’s office everyday to get a shot in the back end. Embarrassing, I know, but the only good thing about it was that the doctor’s of-fice was right next door to my house, so I didn’t have to go far.
One day a friend invited me to attend a three day retreat called TEC: Teens Encounter Christ. I accepted the invitation with eagerness. I was already born again and filled with the Spirit, and was looking for opportunities to increase my faith and draw closer to the Lord.
On the third day of this retreat they took each group of teens into the chapel for some more intimate prayer time. Each student was invited to pray in turn, and really just pour out their hearts to the Lord. Well, I did.
As I spoke to the Lord, I thanked Him for the wonderful weekend retreat and all that He was doing in my life. Then I said, “Lord, your word says that if I ask I will receive. So, I’m asking you to heal my body from this disease, and I believe I receive it right now.” After my group came out of the chapel, I felt I needed to testify to the larger group. So I stood up before them, and told them how I had asked the Lord to heal me, and that I had been healed. Now, I was still coughing; they all heard me. But I knew in my heart that I had asked and received. The coughing continued for the next three days, but then I was healed. Completely healed. This sickness had been going on for months. I was so happy to be healed.
But I had to take it by faith!
God bless you friends,
Joe

Show Them The Picture Not The Negative

Hey Friends,

So we’re trying to raise our kids. We look and see them doing something, something wrong and our first inclination is to stop them from doing what they’re doing. Granted that’s often a good idea unless it’s your only method of correcting wrong behavior. When the child is about to do something that could be harmful to him or someone else stopping them is the best thing.
But, if all your child hears is “don’t do this”, “don’t do that” then all they’re being given as a picture of right behavior is a negative.
Do you know what a negative looks like? Some people who have only been around digital photography might not know what a negative looks like. It’s the exact opposite of a picture. It’s what’s left of the ink after the picture has taken the ink it needs. It’s a reverse image. No matter how you explain it a negative is not easy to comprehend. It’s difficult to look at a negative image and get an idea of what was really being shot.
To show your child the actual type of behavior they should try to go after you need to show them a positive. What does that mean? Tell them what to do more than you tell them what not to do. Paint a verbal picture for them that is desirable, something they want to do.
I was giving my two little girls some instructions this morning. We were on our way to meet with an old college friend I hadn’t seen in over a decade. When I set the appointment Nancy was going to be able to watch the girls, but that changed. She had to work. So here I go with my two little pretties in tow.
“Now, Oli & Jules(Olivia & JuliAnna) how should you act when we’re at the lunch?”
“Good.” they responded.
“If you sit quietly at the table, that will be a blessing, so I can talk to my friend.”
“Do you know that if you do something bad that could be embarassing to you or to Dad?”
“Also, if you do something bad they might think Barlows are bad. You don’t want that do you?”
“No.”
“Also, if you do something mean they might think Christians are mean. You don’t want that do you?”
“We represent God, our family and ourselves. Especially God. Let’s show other people how good God is.”
Now granted there was some negative in that talk, but I was trying to win her heart toward what I was saying. These things did minister to Olivia, 5, more than Jules, 2. Their behavior during lunch was really wonderful and my buddy and I had a great time catching up with each other as the girls sat quietly and listened.
There are ways to paint the picture positive and win their hearts and help them desire good rather than to just shun evil.
I hope this helps.
Blessings,
Joe

It’s Not Good For Man To Be Alone!!!

Hey Friends,

Haven’t posted in a while, I was out of town a few days then Nancy took a vacation with her sisters. So, I’ve had the kids since Saturday morning. That can be a good thing once in a while, you know you get more individual time with the kids, you get to talk to them, play with the little ones and get some projects done for Nancy that would bless her.
But the Bible says in Genesis 2:18
The LORD God said,
“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
Well I must tell you that I agree with that scripture. For a time, for a little vacation off with her sisters, no problem. But me being alone would not be good.
All you have to do is walk in the house and look around and you can tell that it’s not good. Nancy does a wonderful job of keeping the house clean and beautiful. I do a mediocre job at best. Nancy makes sure the little girls are completely taken care of. With me they learn more survival skills 🙂

I have told many people this and I’ll share it with you. If it hadn’t been for Nancy I would not be near as blessed as I am in my life. She has had a profound effect on me. I am more of a man. I’m a better father. I’m a better provider. I’m a better pastor and boss. All this due in large part to my wife and her letting God work through her. She encourages me and that means so much.
I’m looking forward to picking her up tonight at the airport. She’s a great blessing to me.
Proverbs 31
10  A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
11  Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
12  She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
I’m a truly blessed man.
Welcome home Nancy!
Love
Joe
